Continuing our “Sites We Like” series today, we share with our readers the incredible Bookshop.org, an online portal that financially supports local, independent bookstores. Not only can you shop the shelves on the site, you can easily become an affiliate and build your own bookshop from your favorite titles. I have created my own bookshop so I know how easy it is to search for the books and organize them into categories. I have culled my choices into biographies, autobiographies and letters, travel, and non-fiction and history.
Those who curate book lists are actively contributing to the survival of indie bookstores and to the growth of the literary community. As an affiliate, your book lists may be featured on Bookshop’s homepage, category pages and product pages, and each bookshop earns affiliate funds on any purchase made through that shop’s book lists.
Each affiliate is given a unique shop URL, and there are embeddable affiliate widgets that each curator can display on a website and/or social media profiles. The effort they are making to support local bookstores is one of my favorite aspects of this growing platform because, though I do consume digital books, I still absolutely adore holding a printed book in my hands.Even if having another project on the list, such as curating your own lists, isn’t appealing to you, shopping from Bookshop.org rather than defaulting to Amazon can make a world of difference in all of our communities around the country by helping smaller bookstores thrive. And don’t forget that when you are sharing your favorite books on social media, you can find it on Bookshop.org and share that link. This will have such a positive impact. As I was writing this post, bookshop had raised $7,876,371.39 for indie bookstores. Isn’t that a truly remarkable number? Let’s all do our part to help it grow even more!
